Purpose
Hearts Set Free is a support group for those who have been victims of spiritual abuse. We value the ideas, feelings, and values of our participants and aim to be a part of the process that the heart and spirit are working through. We do not force any particular opinions or values. Please make this a place to process your own experiences, at your own pace.
Facilitators
Dr. Jenny Switkes
Founder and President of Enhearten Unseen Leaders
Jenny Switkes is a professor of mathematics at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, where she has the joy of mentoring many first-generation college students from diverse backgrounds. She also serves as a volunteer pastor at Rise OC Church in Costa Mesa, California. Jenny takes joy in walking alongside unseen leaders around the world, and has traveled to Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Myanmar, and Thailand. She has a heart for prisoners and has visited prisons in the U.S. and Uganda. Jenny enjoys hiking, including some epic hikes with her brothers.
Several years ago, my heart was broken in a difficult ministry season in which friends harmed me. I lost my trust in my own discernment and could not make sense of what had happened. The journey back to self-respect and joyful ministry has been long, but it has been good. My heart is to come alongside others on their journey too.
Enhearten Unseen Leaders
Enhearten Unseen Leaders serves leaders who are unseen, overlooked, or marginalized. We walk alongside people to discover their passion and calling and then rise up & live it out.
Enhearten Coaching journeys with unseen leaders as they explore their passion and calling in life. Enhearten Giving works towards a day when people freely share with and receive from unseen leaders nearby and around the world. Enhearten Healing walks alongside those who have experienced trauma and wounding from abusive leaders & communities.

Yumi Ikeda Morse
Director of Soul Care Department /Pastoral Counselor
Yumi came to faith as a university student in Nagasaki at the age of 20. After graduating from a seminary of Immanuel General Mission, she worked as an associate pastor in Kyoto and Osaka for a total of 4 years. She began to receive more and more consultations from people who had suffered spiritual and emotional abuse in churches, and became interested in healthy church management and Christian leadership development.
Completed the M.A. program in Pastoral Care & Counseling at Talbot Theology Seminary, Biola University, U.S. (2019). Director of Second Level Ministries, Soul Care Department. In addition to providing spiritual and emotional support to Christians, she also assists in the recovery of victims of spiritual abuse and cultic churches.
I believe that the pain we receive in our faith life is more serious than the pain in our mind. For while the mental and physical pain affects our life in this world, the pain we receive in our souls inflicts wounds that can lead to the loss of eternal life. Sometimes what we think of as God's teachings, Christ's teachings, are actually the result of many cultural and human influences. It is my mission to help as many people as possible not to be lost before God.
Soul Care Ministry
Soul Care is part of Second Level Ministry, a ministry involved in the spiritual growth and discipleship of Japanese believers in Christ. Second Level Ministries works in partnership with local churches to provide the necessary support primarily in discipleship training.
Soul Care provides pastoral care, including a psychological approach, and spiritual direction rooted in a culture of spiritual formation, with the goal of restoring and growing the whole soul, including the mind, body, social, and spirituality of the person God created.
Mallory Hrehor
Mallory Hrehor was raised in a Christian home and received her K-12 education at classical Christian schools. After receiving her BA in Humanities, she began teaching middle and high school students at classical Christian schools. During this time she earned both an MA in philosophy and an MA in religious studies from the University of Denver. After experiencing spiritual abuse during her time working at Christian schools, Mallory has become passionate about raising awareness about spiritual abuse and providing support systems to people who have experienced this. She is currently working on her PhD in the history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge. Her research centers around the issues of religion and science. In her free time, Mallory enjoys spending quality time with friends, trail running, and listening to true crime podcasts.
When I experienced spiritual abuse I felt like the ground had fallen out from underneath me. Religion had always been a place where I found my strength and comfort. The abuse I experienced turned that safe space into a place that was anxiety inducing. The whole experience was so difficult to explain to my friends and family in a way they would understand. Finding support from other people who have also walked through this has been incredibly healing in my own journey and I am passionate about extending that support to others as well.
